As a graphic designer, Takuya Minami creates designs for advertising materials, publications, and packaging for CDs and other products. He also contributes to the graphic and sound design of performances as a production team member. Among all his projects, his work with Dumb Type stands out as the most significant.

Minami first encountered Dumb Type soon after entering university, with no prior knowledge of the group, and says his work with them profoundly influenced him. Dumb Type is known for a collaborative production process, where members engage in open dialogue beyond their individual roles to create together. Minami’s approach, which he describes as “collaborative work with artists,” has likely been shaped by his 30-year involvement with Dumb Type. The exhibition’s title, “w/,” means “with.”

This exhibition features works selected by Minami, created for Dumb Type, as well as for artists like Ryoji Ikeda, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Shiro Takatani, with whom he has built relationships through his work. Come experience the quiet intensity of Minami’s creations, which express a deep spirituality through dialogue with artists and a close alignment with their visions.

ShirosI met Takuya Minami in the mid-1980s when we were both students at Kyoto City University of Arts and connected through Dumb Type’s activities. The first Dumb Type project he worked on was the graphic design for the flyer and poster of the performance “S/N” in 1995. Since then, he has been responsible for the graphic design of all Dumb Type installations and performances, up to our latest work, “2022: remap” (International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, Artizon Museum), in 2023. He designs an entire range of graphics not only for Dumb Type's works but also for my own, contributing significantly to the creation process. His work extends beyond publicity tools (flyers, posters, websites, and more) to play an essential role in typography and graphics within the works themselves. Minami is also active as a sound artist and DJ, providing music for Dumb Type and my own performances, and performing as a musician in Dumb Type’s concert “2022: remix” (2022, Venice / 2023, ICC, Tokyo). When I collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Minami handled the graphics. Since then, he has designed many of Sakamoto’s works (albums and various other publications), including his final projects, “12” and “Opus.”
Graphic design is a medium that accurately conveys the philosophy and spirituality at a work’s core, making it a crucial element of the creation itself. My 30-year collaboration with Takuya Minami is something irreplaceable to me.

Since the late 1980s, he has engaged in artistic activities under various names as part of artist collectives. Currently, as a member of Softpad, he explores the boundaries and intersections of different media, working across installation, performance, sound, and design.
