The graphic designer Norio Nakamura has garnered attention for his stunning visual worlds, such as his graphics as part of the art unit Maywa Denki and the PlayStation game I.Q (Intelligent Qube) he worked on with Masahiko Sato in the 1990s. Appealing aspects found in all of Nakamura’s projects are the minimalist artwork that is his specialty, the appeal of his multifaceted perspective, and visuals that rouse the imagination. He creates rich expressions using minimal design with everything unnecessary eliminated, conveying the essence of the message in condensed form while demonstrating that simple does not mean simplistic.

This exhibition combines past works from many areas—including projects for advertising and the music industry, videos, and picture books—with new works created for this show, interspersed with Nakamura’s major works. Viewers may find themselves making new discoveries as they take a close look once more at familiar works and compare them with his new output. Like the many children who have been enchanted by Norio Nakamura’s picture books, this is an opportunity to seek out hidden treasures that lie beyond the concise forms and colors.
