Exhibition information
kyoto ddd gallery the 254th Exhibition Superplay -Graphic design in Rotterdam
November 04, 2026 - January 13, 2027
Rotterdam is not only one of the world’s leading trading ports, but also a city rebuilt after being devastated by bombing during World War II. Rising from the ruins, the city is now home to contemporary architecture firms such as OMA and MVRDV, and an awareness of architecture and urban space permeates everyday life. This environment likely influences how both studios extend graphics into spaces and objects.
“Superplay” is a coined term combining “Super Graphic,” referring to graphic design that extends beyond the dimensions of paper and into physical space, with “Play,” meaning play.
This exhibition introduces the distinctive design of Rotterdam, a thriving port city, which differs somewhat from the widely familiar image of Dutch design centered on Amsterdam, thereby broadening perceptions of design in the Netherlands.

Profile
Studio Spass
Studio Spass is an art and design studio founded by Jaron Korvinus and Daan Mens. Its practice spans visual identities, campaigns, and spatial design projects. Its style combines a meticulous, intellectual approach with a sense of playfulness. The studio is interested in exploring the boundaries of visual systems and expressing that exploration in a variety of forms. Its creative process begins by responding to the context of a given space, bringing together a strong interest in form, materials, and interaction in a seamless whole.
Team Thursday
Team Thursday is a graphic design studio founded by Loes van Esch and Simone Trum. Its work primarily encompasses visual identities, books, and spatial objects. Its practice is characterized by a particular interest in typography, a curiosity about materials, and an exploration of the performative potential of objects. The studio finds patterns in everyday life and in everything around it, and explores ways of transforming them into design. It also occasionally holds workshops in the Netherlands and abroad and teaches typography at ArtEZ Arnhem.
