Concept

In tribute to the 30th anniversary of the exhibition led by Jean-François Lyotard, «Les Immatériaux» (Centre Pompidou, 1985), this exhibition is dedicated to design and innovation, to materiality and immateriality. The exploration, initiated 30 years ago, will be pursued in following 4 areas:
– New media / questioning the place of spectator in relation to devices 
– Sensoriality / a sensory experience dedicated to the 5 senses 
– 3D Modeling / exploration of multiple variables and flexibility in production processes
– Database / as source of renewal: with dialogue between preservation and state-of-the-art research for material innovation.
This confrontation between the “material” and “immaterial” world will focus on forms of what creating and innovating mean.

■François AZAMBOURG (Designer, Paris)
Winner of the Villa Medicis hors les Murs in 2003, for the Grand Prix du Design de Paris 2004, laureate of the Villa Kujoyama in 2015, he has participated in numerous shows around the world exhibiting lighting and furniture projects for Capellini, Hermès, Poltrona Frau,Ligne Roset and Galerie Kréo. He is oriented towards simplicity and brightness, pushing himself in the realm of objects to go against common trends.

■Jean-Louis BOISSIER　(Emeritus Prof. University Paris 8 / Media artist / Researcher  Paris)
Born in 1945 in Loriol-sur-Drôme. Emeritus Professor
of contemporary art, and research director in Aesthetics of New Media at the University Paris 8; he curated the biennial “Artifices” (Saint-Denis, 1990–1996), the “Revue Virtuelle” (Centre Pompidou, 1991–1996), the cycles “Jouable” (Geneva, Kyoto, Paris, 2002–2004) and “Mobilisable” (2008–2013). His interactive installations have been exhibited internationally since 1985. His publications include: La relation comme forme. L’interactivité en art (Mamco, Geneva, 2009).

■Masaki FUJIHATA (Media artist, Tokyo)
A trailblazing media artist, begining with computer graphic in 80’s, his work has shifted towards making computer sculptures. His most successful work “Beyond Pages” (1995–1997) pioneered interactive art in the late 90’s. His experiments with GPS technology and movie images began in 1992. “Impressing Velocity”, to the “Voices of Aliveness” 2012, explore new possibilities of meaning found in document and memory, and visualize continuities between the virtual and real. ■Marie-Ange GUILLEMINOT (Artist, Paris)
Graduated of Villa Arson, she lives and works in Paris. She obtains, in 1997, the merit of honor at the Biennale of Venice for “Le Salon de Transformation”. An artist who is very present on the international art scene (Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, 2005, Kyoto Art Center, 2006, Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2010, Villa Savoye, Poissy, 2012). The exhibition “Laps”, shown at the Cité de la Céramique de Sèvres in 2013, presents a retrospective on the entirety of her works. “Evanescence—Beauté de l’instant” (Nuit Blanche, Kyoto, 2014) calls for reminiscence of time and space nurtured by Japanese culture which runs through all her tactile and artistic approach.

■Hosoo Archive / ULTRA FACTORY Kyoto University of Art and Design (Kyoto)
Hosoo is a Kyoto-based textile company founded in 1688. Its history can be traced back to the Kyoto silk industry of the sixth century and today the company is widely acknowledged for its exceptional skills within traditional Japanese three-dimensional weaving techniques and for applying richly textured Nishijin weaving into contemporary design. Their fabrics are designed and developed in a close collaboration with world-acclaimed designers and use only premium materials made by artisan craftspeople from Kyoto. It owns a massive database of old textile motifs and patterns from Edo era and has embarked on the digitalization of around 20,000 archives in collaboration with ULTRA FACTORY Kyoto University of Art and Design.

■Laura Lynn JANSEN+Thomas VAILLY (Design  Eindhoven)
Laura Lynn Jansen is Dutch, and Thomas Vailly is French. Graduates of Design Academy Eindhoven, they bring their talents together to produce works that revamp the production process and awaken the poetic power of perspectives. Whether they are growing stone objects “CaCO3/stoneware” or investigating the colorful nature of light “101.86°–Color
of the Day”, the signature of their collaboration is the great attention paid to natural phenomena. These projects suggest alternative processes of harvesting raw material, transformation and production of goods while working with natural processes and phenomenon.

A design firm that identifies itself by finding big challenges in society and discovering innovative solutions by designing necessary yet beautiful relations in between. Just as their name “NOSIGNER” stands for ‘professionals who design intangible things’, they work beyond conventional disciplines of designing graphics, products, or space, for a more synthetic designs including branding and making of a business model.
Through their works, they aim to create social innovation in various fields, including local industries, technology, education, sustainability, cultural exchange and open source design.

■Yasuaki ONISHI  (Artist, Osaka)
He creates works of sculpture that visualize spaces normally accepted as hollow or blank, with the straightforward themes of volume, verticality and distance. He has an M.A. Fine Art Sculpture from Kyoto City University of Arts 2004. He has had several international exhibitions in Japan, US and Europe and received numerous awards including Pola Art Foundation, 2011 and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, 2010.

A creative design team formed in 1999 in Kyoto, dealing with audio and video multimedia. Currently, they are active in installation, live performance, sound, design, and other fields, transcending limitations of genre while exploring boundaries and connections in media expression. Recent activities include “sensibilia” (Museum of Modern Art, Shiga/2006),

■Studio GGSV : Gaelle GABILLET & Stephane VILLARD /  (Designer, Paris)
Founded in 2011 by Gaëlle Gabillet and Stéphane Villard. They received la Carte Blanche of VIA 2011 for their project “Objet Trou Noir” (Black Hole). Their association produces
an atypical approach from curation to research design. They are edited by “Made in Design”, “Petite Friture” and “Galerie Cat Berro”. They have also curated exhibitions and signed the exhibitions “Form follows information” (Biennale of Saint-Etienne, 2015) and “Zones de confort” (Galerie Poirel, Nancy, in collaboration with Juliette Pollet).
Stéphane Villard is the leader of the project workshop INFORME at ENSCI-Les Ateliers.

■Murielle HLADIK (Curator  Paris)
Born in 1968, architect, PhD in philosophy, and curator. She was professor at the National School of Architecture of Saint-Etienne and School of Architecture of Clermont-Ferrand.
She is member of JAPARCHI research network and was guest researcher at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Kyoto, 2009–2010). She published Traces and Fragments within Japanese Aesthetics (Mardaga, 2008, with the support of the Fondation de France and the Japan Foundation). She was also curator of “Traces of Disappearance”, in collaboration with Eva Kraus (Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, January-April 2014), and guest-curator for the Nuit Blanche in Kyoto (“Contemporary Art meets Traditional Crafts“, 2014).
