TDC Exhibition 2016 presents the results of the Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2016, an annual international design competition sponsored by the Tokyo Type Directors Club. The Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2016 drew a total of 2,800 entries (1,703 from Japan and 1,097 from overseas.) After a rigorous screening process, the following prizes were awarded: 1 Grand Prize, 1 Type Design Prize, 1 RGB Prize, 1 Special Prize, and 5 TDC Prizes.
Recipients of the Type Design Prize last year, Henrik Kubel and Scott Williams of the UK were awarded the Grand Prize for their exceptionally polished suite of custom alphabetic typefaces for the New York Times Magazine. Their rigorous commitment to advanced techniques and exquisite sense for expressing nuance makes them a unique presence in today’s type design world.
The TDC Exhibition features more than 150 typographical works including the nine award-winners, nominated works, and a selection of other entries that were evaluated especially highly. This year, too, the exhibition offers a widely varied and idea-filled collection that transcends East and West, crosses generations, and rises above individual forms of media.
